Calgary is home to several lake communities and while they all offer amazing year round recreation opportunities, summer in a lake community is truly amazing. There are so many ways to spend time with your family around the water, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Sundance is a beautiful lake community in SE Calgary. It is located east of Macleod Trail, is bounded to the north and east by Midnapore and Fish Creek Provincial Park and to the south by Stoney Trail.
This neighbourhood boasts a 33 acre man-made lake that offers year round recreation opportunities to the community's residents. Construction of the community began in 1982, however its growth was slower than most neighbourhoods due to economic conditions at the time. As a result, portions of the community were not completed until well into the 1990s. Check out this video that shows the lake as well as portions of community under construction in 1990.
Sundance gets its name from a ceremonies practiced by various Indigenous peoples in the Plains cultures of North America, including the Lakota, Blackfoot, and Cheyenne. Held annually in late spring or summer, these ceremonies focus on renewal, community sacrifice, and honoring the sun. Sun Dances often last four to eight days. Some residents believe the community got its name from The Sundance Kid, also known as Harry Longabaugh. Harry worked in the Calgary area on various ranches in the late 1800's and then famously operated a saloon in Calgary on what is now 9th Avenue SE. After falling out with his Calgary business partner, Harry returned to the US and became an infamous outlaw alongside Butch Cassidy and others. Needless to say, the community was NOT named after him, despite the rumours to the contrary.
Naming folklore aside, Sundance is one of those communities where residents stay for decades, which is evident in the low turnover rates of properties, compared to the rest of the city. With a huge variety of recreation opportunities and amenities, an abundance of parkland as well as 6 schools, it's easy to see why people fall in love with this neighbourhood for life.

How Calgary Community Clean-ups can help you
Every year the City of Calgary works with community associations to put on Community Clean ups.
This year, the clean-ups run from April 25 - September 27 to September 27 on weekends (usually 9 am-2 pm), offering free disposal for household items that don't fit in black carts.
- Locations: Check the City of Calgary Community Cleanups calendar for local events in your neighbourhood.
- Accepted Items: Household waste, furniture, and materials that cannot fit in standard black carts.
- Prohibited Items: Household hazardous waste (paint, chemicals), car batteries, electronics, liquids, and appliances with Freon.
The City of Calgary's 2026 Pathway and River Cleanup takes place May 1-3, 2026. This annual event involves thousands of volunteers who generously donate their time to help clean up Calgary's parks and pathway systems.
